What your day will look like.

As a volunteer, you can expect to build meaningful relationships with our local team members, volunteers from abroad, and, of course, the children! You will be immersed in the local culture, enjoying delicious Mexican food, the dreamy Mocorito downtown, and either learning or sharpening your Spanish.

Your weekly schedule will consist of engaging the kids in fun activities, connecting with them throughout the day, and relaxing or enjoying the company of other volunteers in the evening. As for your weekends, you can make them as relaxing or adventurous as you would like!

  • Evenings and weekends are free.

Volunteers are welcome to go out to town and explore (but must be back before dark).

Volunteers are also welcome to participate at local churches with preaching, singing, sharing a testimony, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where will I live?

Our volunteers from abroad live in the Safehome house. We have three volunteer bedrooms with all necessary accommodations.

  • How will I get to the Safehome House from the airport?

You will be picked up by one of our local team members and driven to the house.

  • How many other volunteers will be living in the house?

It really depends on when you come. Some seasons are more busy than others. There will be no more than six volunteers from abroad at a time. There can be as few as one volunteer at a time because we also work with local volunteers who live in Mocorito.

  • Is Mocorito a safe place to live?

We have lived in Mocorito as foreigners for multiple years and have never had any problems regarding safety. Our house is secure. The local people are really kind and friendly. We have built many strong relationships with the local members of this community. We hang out, eat, and shop around town daily with no problems. However, the safety of Safehome children and volunteers is a top priority for us and so your orientation will cover more details on this.

  • Where do the programs happen?

The programs happen inside the volunteer house. It is a spacious place with specific rooms designated for each program. The children do not access the part of the house where volunteer rooms are.

  • If I want to go out on the weekend, how do I get into town?

Safehome owns a SUV that all volunteers share. Mostly, volunteers coordinate and plan trips together. However, you will also receive a list of trusted local drivers that you are welcome to get rides with for a small fee.

  • What happens if I need to see a doctor?

There is a local hospital in Mocorito about ten minutes from Safehome.

  • Is food shared?

Each volunteer is responsible for purchasing and preparing his/her own food.

  • How much should I expect to pay for food?

It really depends on how much you eat out and how much you prepare your meals at home. But food is slightly less expensive here than in the US. One juicy, filling taco costs $2.50. So depending on what and where you are eating, you can expect to pay anywhere between $50 to $80 a week on food but many people spend far less.

  • Is the water safe to drink?

The tap water is not safe to drink. However, we have a filter installed in our sink that makes the water safe for cooking and drinking.

  • What other costs do I need to consider?

Besides plane tickets, gas, housing, and food, you might want to bring some extra money for potential medical needs and souvenirs.

  • What fun things can I do on the weekend?

Mocorito is a very small but beautiful town with unique architecture. Tourists come to Mocorito to see it frequently. Therefore, one thing to do is enjoy the center plaza. There are lots of little delicious restaurants and yummy treats. There are also beautiful beaches just two hours away. If that’s something that interests you, please ask us for more details.

  • What can I do to best prepare myself to lead the programs at Safehome?

Each volunteer that comes down is required to get certified in Informed Trauma Care. After you apply, we will send you a link to the course. The course will help you prepare to work with the children here. You can also prepare by studying the basics of Spanish.
